چکیده

The background to this work on the parthenogenetic winged form of Aphis fabae Scop, is given in two earlier papers (Kennedy & Booth, 1963a, b: referred to hereafter by date only), where it was shown that aphids allowed to fly and alight freely in a laboratory flight chamber become increasingly ready to settle down, feed and larviposit on a leaf the longer they have flown. Flight and settling are the two main activities of these insects and they are nervous antagonists, each a complex of responses which inhibits the other. But the strengthening of the settling responses, following flight, is not in the first place a consequence of some negative feedback weakening flight, for it occurs even when flight is still gaining in strength. This type of coordination of two successive activities was therefore thought to be a central nervous process and named antagonistic induction. Settling responses are in large measure inhibited before flight occurs and totally inhibited when it starts; and afterwards, when the settling responses that have been primed by flight are initiated on an unsuitable leaf, or even on a suitable one if the priming has not been sufficient, they are soon inhibited by flight once again (1963 a, b). This suggested a method of confirming that the co-ordination of flight and settling is a central nervous function, with peripheral feedback having only a reinforcing effect. If so, then it might be possible, by appropriate external stimulation alone, to tip the balance against the excitatory, priming effect of flight on settling and in favour of the inhibitory effect, even to the point of reversing the normal course of events and producing a decrease instead of an increase in settling readiness after flight. This paper gives the evidence obtained on that point.

Role of nitrogen content of pea (Pisum sativum L.) on pea aphid (Acyrthosiphon pisum Harris) establishment

The leaf nitrogen content is generally accepted as an indicator of food quality and as a factor affecting host selection by phytophagous insects. The alate pea aphids (Acyrthosiphon pisum Harris, Aphididae) were given a choice among non-nodulated pea plants (Pisum sativum L.) supplied with one of four nitrate-N levels (0, 3, 15 and 30 mM). When whole plants were exposed to aphids for 7 days, th...

Co-ordination of two kinds of flight activity in an aphid.

1. The interaction between 'migratory flight', defined as flight oriented vertically and horizontally towards a large overhead light source, and 'targeted flight' oriented towards a yellow leaf-like object seen to one side against a dark background, has been analysed in Aphis fabae in a laboratory flight chamber. Landings were prevented by regulating a down-current of air so as to balance the f...

Chlorotic feeding injury by the black pecan aphid (hemiptera: aphididae) to pecan foliage promotes aphid settling and nymphal development.

The nature of the interaction between the black pecan aphid, Melanocallis caryaefoliae (Davis) (Hemiptera: Aphididae), and the chlorosis it causes to foliage of its pecan [Carya illinoinensis (Wangenh.) K. Koch)] host is poorly understood. Laboratory experiments were conducted on the settling behavior of the black pecan aphid, when provided chlorotic pecan leaf discs resulting from previous bla...

A New Approach for Determination of Break Points for Protection Co-Ordination

Interconnected power system networks are multi loop structured. Settings determination of all over current and distance relays in such networks can be in different forms and complicated. The main problem is the determination of starting points i.e. the location of starting relays in the procedure for settings, which is referred to as break points. In this paper, a new approach based on graph th...
